Opal Class – Years 1 & 2

Opal is taught by Mrs Michaela Hicks. The Teaching Assistants are Mrs Adele Frew and Mrs Donna Wren. Opal Class is made up of children in years 1 and 2.

In Opal we try to create a safe, enjoyable and nurturing learning environment for the children.

In KS1 we engage in a variety of exciting learning including hands on practical activities, sessions in our outdoor learning area and we start to engage in a more formal approach to learning.

We are committed to building children’s oracy skills and children are encouraged to share their ideas in whole class discussions and with a learning partner on the carpet before moving onto their independent or group task.

Early reading and writing is a key focus for KS1 children and we use the RWI Phonics programme to help children become confident readers and writers.

In maths we follow the White Rose maths scheme. Children engage in practical activities to secure understanding before moving onto written work in the workbooks.

We have exciting termly topics planned for the children, which will help them have a good understanding of our world. Together with lots of enrichment activities to enhance the children’s learning. (See our topic plan for 2025-2026).
