Moonstone is taught by Miss Carina Phillips. The class is also supported by Teaching Assistant Miss Charlotte Barnard. Moonstone Class is made up of years 5 and 6 children.
We teach through a wide range of carefully chosen texts, which we rotate over a two-year cycle. This ensures children enjoy a rich variety of stories, genres and themes, while making meaningful links across the curriculum. On this page, you will also find our curriculum overview, long-term plan, knowledge organisers and topic webs to give you a clear picture of what your child will be learning across the year.
Our learning approach
In Moonstone , our texts are the foundation for much of our learning. They inspire children’s reading and writing and connect with our foundation subjects, helping children see how knowledge and ideas join together.
In mathematics, we follow the White Rose scheme, which builds fluency and deep understanding. A key part of this is times tables practice, which children should complete daily at home. Strong recall supports every area of maths, from fractions to problem solving.
Trips and experiences
We believe trips bring learning to life and create lasting memories. Over a two-year cycle, children take part in a range of enriching visits, including:
- Print making at Kelmscott Manor
- Cooking at Pizza Express
- Exploring the Ashmolean and Pitt Rivers Museums
- Hands-on science at the Winchester Science Museum
These are rotated across the two years so every child has the opportunity to experience them. In addition, we enjoy a residential trip in the summer. This year, we are looking forward to Osmington Bay, where children develop independence, teamwork and resilience while having lots of fun.
Homework expectations
To support children’s learning in school, we ask that they complete the following at home:
- Daily reading – please encourage your child to read every day and talk about what they are reading with you.
- Daily times tables practice – using resources such as Times Tables Rock Stars or free websites like Hit the Button.
- Weekly spellings – taught in school during the week and tested every Thursday.
- Weekly maths practice – set tasks will be linked to class learning, and children can also use free websites to practise and reinforce new concepts.
- Topic homework – set termly, designed to be creative and engaging, often linking to class projects.
Working Together
By working in partnership, we can ensure that every child in Moonstone thrives both academically and personally. If you ever have any questions or would like to discuss your child’s learning, please do come and speak to Miss Phillips – her door is always open.
